You Can Send A Radiogram

Amateur radio operators (also known as hams) are ready to provide valuable communications when all other conventional methods fail. Many amateurs have joined the National Traffic System (NTS) network, and spend their free time relaying messages, called Radiograms, completely free of charge.

You can send a message of 25 words or less, as long as it’s not business-related, urgent, or private. The NTS is an open system. Your message will be picked up by an amateur radio operator and then relayed by voice, digital modes, or even by Morse code. Finally, the recipient will get a phone call from a local ham, or the message might be delivered by mail, or in person.

Hi Bill, Thanks for sending this item. Interesting, for sure. I’m wondering . . . . do you know Morse Code? It seems like something that you’d dabble in. One of my uncles served the country during WWII – he dealt with communications. I remember him bringing out a Morse code “gizmo” and demonstrating how he’d send the many dots and dashes messages. We were all fascinated by it.

Hope you and your family are well!! Marcia

I do know Morse Code, but I am rusty. I did pass my 5 words per minute test to earn my Technician Plus license. Since then, Morse Code is no longer a requirement for any of the amateur radio license classes. However, I have dabbled with it from time-to-time.

No surprise that you are familiar with Morse Code – especially since it’s something that radio operators can use. Seems like it would take a lot of time to send messages when there are easier and faster ways of messaging people nowadays. You may receive this note twice; I don’t think that the other one that I sent actually arrived. 😀 Marcia
