January

January was the coldest month of 2023 but was warmer than normal with a monthly mean of 36.7 F, which was 9.5 F above normal, with a high of 58.0 F and a low for the month of 20.4 F. Precipitation was 0.43 inches above normal with 3.35 inches of liquid precipitation. There were 5.2 inches of snow this month, with a maximum daily total of 3.2 inches on January 26.

February

February was an above-normal month for temperature, with a mean of 37.0 F, which was 7.9 F above normal. The high was 70.9 F and the low was 5.2 F. August

August temperatures were 1.0 F below normal with a mean of 69.4. The high was 87.5 F and the low was 51.5 F. Precipitation was 1.42 inches above normal at 5.58 inches.

September

Temperatures were normal with a mean of 63.2 F. The high was 90.0 F and the low was 43.1 F. There were 2.43 inches of rainfall, which was 1.52 inches below normal.

On two occasions, smoke drifted down from the Canadian wildfires into our region. The first was June 6-8.

The second was June 28-30.

The air quality became unhealthy during both events and the first one was slightly worse.

Canada Wildfire Smoke Reaches Stormstown

Afternoon at Stormstown, PA on Wednesday, June 7, 2023

On Wednesday, June 7, 2023, smoke from several major wildfires in Canada drifted into the central Pennsylvania region. The air quality in the area became unhealthy as a result.

This is a graph of air quality parameters collected during the week of June 7. A Davis AirLink sensor at my home collected the data. The wood smoke adjustment was enabled.

The graph shows that the general air quality index (AQI), the index for particulates that are 10 micrometers and smaller (PMI 10) was quite high, and particulates of 2.5 micrometers and smaller (PMI 2.5). In fact, the overall AQI was in the red or unhealthy range, nearly at the purple or very unhealthy level. Particulates of 1 micrometer or smaller (PMI 1) were in the moderate range.
